Differentiation of Blood Cell Types by Hemoglobin Content
- Red Blood Cells absorb 405 nm laser light very strongly due to their Hemoglobin content.
- White Blood Cells and Platelets do not absorb light at this wavelength.
- By measuring absorbance and light scatter, Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and Platelets are distinguished and counted in a single step by flow cytometry.
- All cells in a μL sample are counted. The sample is collected by lancet finger stick or from another tube into a μL tube by capillary action.
- Blood collection does not require a phlebotomist.
- It can be self-administered, as in glucose monitoring.
- The full 22-parameter Complete Blood Count and 5-part White Blood Cell Differential is obtained, including Red Blood Cell indices.
- Red Blood Cells are sphered by reagent surfactant in order to obtain Hemoglobin and other Red Blood Cell indices.
- A single, inexpensive, and long-term stable reagent serves as diluent, sheath, and rinse.
